Advocacy is at the core of the PTA mission to make every child's potential a reality. While state and federal advocacy efforts garner much attention, so often the most meaningful advocacy happens in small and large PTA communities all around Texas.
Allen ISD Council of PTAs is proud to receive the 2025 - 2026 Texas PTA Outstanding Council Advocacy Impact Award in recognition of their advocacy efforts.
Contacting Your Elected Officials
-----------------------------------------------
Advocacy begins with making your voice heard. Whether you choose to write, email, or call your elected officials, clear and respectful communication can make a meaningful impact.
Keep Your Message Focused
Address one bill, issue, or concern per letter or email. A concise message is more likely to be read and understood.
Introduce Yourself
Include your name and, if applicable, the organization you represent.
State Your Purpose Early
Begin with a brief introduction, then clearly explain the issue or concern you are addressing.
Make It Local
Help legislators understand how the issue affects their constituents. Share specific examples of how proposed legislation may impact students, educators, schools, or families within their district.
Provide Contact Information
Include your phone number, email address, and any other relevant contact information. Let the legislator know you are available to answer questions or provide additional information if needed.
Follow Up
Consider noting that you will follow up with a phone call to discuss the issue further.
Use the Correct Title
Address your correspondence appropriately, using titles such as Senator or Representative, and specify whether they serve in the U.S. Senate, U.S. House of Representatives, Texas Senate, or Texas House of Representatives.
Tips for Email Communication
When sending an email, be sure to:
- Use a professional and respectful tone.
- Avoid informal language, abbreviations, or slang.
- Include your full name, address, and ZIP code so the legislator can verify that you are a constituent.
